Sweet potato vs. Pumpkin

It’s that time of the year for that age
old battle of the pies, sweet potato or pumpkin.

Every thanksgiving and christmas my
family has sweet potato. I only ever knew about sweet
potato pie growing up because that is all my mother made.

So imagine my surprise when I tasted pumpkin pie for the first time.
I was at a school holiday party and
I thought to myself this sweet potato pie taste weird.
I ended up throwing it in the trash thinking it was spoiled.
A week later I attended my mothers office party.
My mother made sweet potato pie and brought an apple pie to
contribute to the potluck. I was excited,
I don’t know if I mentioned this but I love sweet potato pie.
I helped set up the conference room with my mother
and found it odd that someone else
had brought sweet potato pie knowing my mom was making hers.
I’ m thinking to myself rookie mistake,
my mom makes the best
sweet potato pie on the planet  (in my opinion).
Once the festivities began
I loaded my plate up with every desert in the room,
except for the coconut cake.
That’s a story for another time. Anyway
I saved the sweet
potato pies for last.
After stuffing my face with all the other
deserts I started with the other sweet potato pie.
Again it tasted sour to me.
I asked my mom what was wrong with all of these spoiled pies.
She laughed and said “that’s pumpkin pie Zykia, it’s not sour”.
To say my mind was blown was an understatement.
Not because I had eaten something
and didn’t know what it was because at that age it
was normally how I tried new things.
The mind blowing part was that I couldn’t
tell the difference by looking at it.

I wouldn’t revisit the pumpkin pie for years to come.
But being the foodie that I am and the caterer I am
I never surrender to a dish.
I attempted to make my own pumpkin pie at sixteen.
I don’t want to say epic fail but I ended up
being the only one eating it.
My next attempt was at eighteen, it went significantly better.
But my family was not trying to
hear it especially my mom.
She is the leader of our pallets.
The pilot who took our taste buds on their first flight.
So if she’s not willing to eat it the rest of us follow suit.
Hints why I never had pumpkin pie willingly.
Me being me I don’t conform to any food restrictions,
unless its spoiled lol. I am a food rebel.
My mother often asks where
I come from because I couldn’t possibly be her
child eating some of the things I eat.
I told her if you don’t try
new things then you can’t grow.
Like I teach my kids, how do you know if you
don’t like something unless you try it.
So moral of the story is take a chance and
make your own food choices. You never know you may like it.
Even though I have expected
pumpkin pie into my life i’m still a sweet potato pie girl.
Which side are you on?
